Happy Earth Day from EGB!

It’s Earth Day and all of us from Everly Grace wanted to share a few tips with you

Earth Day started in 1970 all because a group of concerned citizens, and a few government officials cared. And, like the famous Lorax says, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Here at Everly Grace we believe our actions (big and small) matter; from partnering with eco-aware companies, to taking our recycling to

Recycle Utah, to saying no to plastic cups or straws. This Earth Day we are sharing some of our favorite tips to living a more sustainable life. Join us in being a little gentler to this beautiful place we are lucky to call home, and a little kinder to our wallets and health.

Reduce the amount of water you use because… Every. Little. Drop Counts.

1.     Keep a pitcher by your sink and fill it with the leftover water used to boil pasta or potatoes, the water your kids left in the cups, ice cubes that fell on the floor, etc. And, when it is time to water your plants use that water first.

2.     Busy parents are going to love this next tip… skip hand washing your dishes. If you have a full load the most energy and water efficient option is to hit start on your Energy Star machine and go read a book while it does the work for you. Washing dishes by hand sends more than two gallons of water per minute down the drain, while dishwashers typically use between 2-8 gallons of water total. Don’t forget to save even more time and water by skipping the pre-rinse too. Scrape any leftover food into a compost bin and let the dishwasher do the rest.

3.     Turn the water off when brushing your teeth or scrubbing your hands. It is by far one of the easiest ways to save about ten gallons of water a day. TEN!

Choose products with earth-safe ingredients.

What we put on our body is just as important as what we put in it. Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs everything that touches it. Review our blog from 2018 to learn more about ingredients to look for and those to avoid. And, consider making the switch to these clean skin care options:

1.     Naturopathica’s Lavender Protective Moisturizer : Instead of chemicals that are linked to hormone imbalances and cancer, this sunscreen uses reef-safe micronized zinc oxide to block UVA/UVB rays.

2.     Epicuren’s Clarify Polishing Mask: Many drugstore brands use harsh chemicals to exfoliate your skin. But this detoxifying mask and refining scrub uses Bentonite Clay, Sulfur, and Tea Tree Oil to leave your skin smooth and healthy.

Limit your plastic consumption. Plastic is everywhere. Toxins are seeping into packaged produce, plastic bags and bottles are filling our oceans, and some studies show we consume 5 grams of plastic a week. Even for the most earth and health-conscious family plastic can be daunting to avoid. Eliminating all plastic might seem impossible. But, just cutting a few sources of plastic out of your daily life can still make a big impact.

1.     Keep plastic off your produce. – Those packaged salads are healthy, nutritious and quick. Right? Eh… maybe not so much. Most packaged greens are washed in chlorine and packaged with a mix of gasses called “modified atmosphere.” Plus, most of these packages are up to two weeks old. Veggies start to lose nutrition value the second they are picked, which means that packaged bag you choose to be healthy has lost the majority of the health benefits. Skip the additional chemicals and increase the nutrition density of your food by opting for loose leaf spinach, heads of lettuce, and loose carrots instead. Better yet, get your produce from a local farmer’s market!

2.     Go for glass – In our house, we are switching our self-care and home care products to plastic-free packaging. Even better if it is a refillable container! We have lots of products for sale that come in glass like Naturopathica’s Collidial Silver Cleanser or the Calendula Essential Hydrating Cream . Both are free of harsh chemicals and come in easily recyclable glass bottles.

3.     Refill to reduce - When it comes to keeping our home clean we love Grove Collaborative’s cleaner concentrates. Their concentrates are made with 95% plant-based ingredients and come in glass bottles to refill your favorite reusable bottle with.

If you live in Park City, swing into FulFILLed Utah. Their beautiful store is filled with refillable, package free, products from shampoo to laundry detergent. All made with safe ingredients for the earth and your family.
